Job Description




Onion Lake Family Services supports families by collaborating with our community and elders to assist our children, youth and families to thrive in a nurturing and safe environment.  Onion Lake Cree Nation is a Plains Cree First Nation in Treaty Six Territory bordering the Alberta and Saskatchewan Provincial Border, approximately 50 km North of Lloydminster.  The Nation has approximately 585 square km of land area and a membership of approximately 6500.  Onion Lake Family Services is an incorporated body that serves the children and families in the community.  We pride ourselves as being a leader among Indigenous communities providing services related to child welfare and protection.  Part of our service is also to provide Enhanced Prevention whereby we offer innovative programs and services that enrich the well-being, health and prosperity of children and families.  We strive to provide program delivery to support a thriving and self-reliant future for the members of Onion Lake Cree Nation.


Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Lead Custodian cleans assigned areas which may include offices, meeting rooms, hallways, restrooms, kitchen/lunchroom, boardroom, common areas, waiting rooms, storage areas, and other areas in the complex used or operated by the Onion Lake Family Services Inc. This position also includes grounds keeping, such as mowing, weeding, shoveling, or any other duty required to ensure the facility grounds are clean and presentable at all times.  The Lead Custodian will also ensure all supplies are ordered as needed and stock is maintained.  S/he will supervise and assign work to other custodians and will complete any required disciplinary matters to those under his/her supervision.  Evaluations will also need to be completed as per policy.

CORE HOURS: Monday to Friday Split Shift (7:30-11:30 AM & 3-6:30 PM)

                                    Please note, some evenings and weekends are required

  • Open and close building
  • Washing of walls, chairs, desks, floors, walls behind the garbage bins
  • Empties wastebaskets and removes other debris. (Clean basket/cans and changes liners)
  • Operating floor cleaning equipment
  • Mop (wet, damp, and dry) floors
  • Performs spot cleaning and extracting on carpeted/floor surfaces and upholstery
  • Vacuums all required areas
  • Moves furniture as required for cleaning
  • Dusts and polishes furniture, baseboards, file cabinets, window ledges, and other fixtures in offices and all rooms/areas associated with the agency
  • Cleans and disinfects sinks, faucets, urinals, toilets, and other fixtures in restrooms.
  • Cleans and polishes mirrors
  • Cleaning of kitchens (including cupboards, fridges, stoves, etc.)
  • Ensuring that the Family room is always clean and disinfected
  • Maintain outside grounds –debris, and sweeping
  • Snow shoveling.  Organizing contractor for parking lot snow removal
  • Grass cutting and maintenance of trees/shrubs/flowers
  • Coordination of required external contracts. i.e. plumbers, heating/hvac
  • Ensure ALL cleaning materials/supplies are safely stored
  • Keeping a daily log/checklist of cleaning activities
  • Keeping inventory of cleaning supplies and ordering of supplies as necessary
  • Minor repairs of building
  • Supervise other custodians and monitor work performance
  • Annual evaluations and any other required evaluations
  • Disciplinary matters of other custodians
  • Other duties as assigned




  • Knowledge in how to safely handle chemicals and cleaning solutions
  • Knowledge on operating floor cleaning equipment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as a team player
  • Math skills necessary to measure chemicals and cleaning solutions
  • Reading skills necessary to understand instructions, safety materials and regulations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge in how to safely handle chemicals and cleaning solutions

·         Knowledge and experience operating floor cleaning equipment





  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • WHIMIS and related Safety Tickets



  • Two years of previous custodial/janitorial experience
  • Previous supervision of custodians
